Introduction
The National Science & Mathematics Olympiad “NESMO” is a leading annual national competition held across various regions of the Kingdom. It targets students from Grade 7 to Grade 10 in the disciplines of science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and informatics. The competition features three stages of training and assessments before qualifying participants for NESMO Olympiad finals.
The journey of the “NESMO” Olympiad begins at the school level, where each educational institution forms its own team in the targeted disciplines. These teams compete with other schools through multiple stages at the governorate and education administration levels, ultimately advancing to the national finals. The Olympiad aims to identify, and empower and prepare gifted students to compete in international scientific Olympiads.
“NESMO” is the result of a collaborative effort between the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education. This partnership reflects a shared belief in the importance of broadening participation in Olympiad sciences, deepening their impact within the educational environment, and strengthening national integration to elevate the participation of Saudi students in global scientific arenas.
The influence of “NESMO” extends beyond competition outcomes; it contributes to building an educational environment that fosters scientific creativity, enriches curricula with advanced thinking skills, and nurtures a spirit of positive competition among students, teachers, and schools. This, in turn, supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by investing in creative minds and developing a scientifically capable generation ready for global competition.
The core need for launching this Olympiad stems from the desire to build on the national momentum achieved through notable successes in international competitions and to transfer this impact to various education directorates by expanding training opportunities to include all students across the Kingdom. Leadership in both the Ministry of Education and Mawhiba recognized this need in alignment with the Kingdom’s vision, which prioritizes the development of Saudi citizens and the enhancement of their capabilities as a central pillar of the Human Capability Development Program.
Reaffirming the school’s central role in fostering a capable and innovative generation - and empowering teachers to discover and support gifted students “NESMO” is founded on the principle that every school in the Kingdom may nominate students it deems capable of representing it in this national competition. Ultimately, the Olympiad serves as a key pipeline for developing the Saudi national scientific teams that participate in international Olympiads.
